Profile Information

Hometown:
North Shore of MA / Southern Florida
Role
General Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher, AT Specialist, Independent Consultant
About Me:
I am a special education teacher and assistive technology specialist focusing on literacy, augmentative communication, alternative access, and technology integration.

First volunteering and then working at the Michael Carter Lisnow Respite Center in 1997 inspired me to pursue a vocation in helping people with special needs. Presently, my work focuses on providing the best learning opportunities for learners from Pre-K through the end of school. My undergraduate degree was obtained at Gordon College in elementary education, special education, and history. My graduate degree is in assistive technology from Simmons College.

For the last three years I have developed and led The Discovery Center Inclusion Program, which focuses on balancing meaningful inclusion with specialized instruction for elementary level students. Additionally, for the last two summers, I have designed and led ALF: Adventures in Learning and Fun, which is an extended year program converted into a camp focused on literacy.

Recently, I have moved to Southern Florida, taking a teaching position at Nova Southeastern University. My role is the lead teacher of a small specialized program focused on helping young learners with augmentative communication need.

Put the mouse over the record, have one student rap their poetry, writing, or the ABC's with a switch, their voice, a device, whatever. The other student can have a switch that clicks the mouse over the record to scratch! -Sam

Hello:

I work for the school district that contains Penn State. We take their student interns but I don't have much other contact with them. Janice Light is there and has a great program there for AAC.

Slow response, I know. I was thinking the reference you asked about, 1500 books, came from Pressley, MacDonald-Wharton, Morrow--the crowd that engaged in the exemplary teacher studies. I think Allington was involved in some of that but I don't think the number came from him or his work directly. Did you ever find original reference?

Hey Sam, hope you are well! I have been developing a new online tool which would allow teachers to create their own digital lessons and then collect data on student responses...similar to using a powerpoint to do those multiple choice lessons or books but will assess the student's work....I would love to get your feedback...just another view point...can you let me know if you'd be interested? thanks! Hi Sam I just left a message for Faith about Facilitated communication can you tell me about this? I found a Woman with Rett that uses this to talk to people. She started with picture cards then word cards then a small typewriter all in one day! any information will be appreciated...Vickie

Thankyou. This looks like a great site & I can't wait to sit down and have a good look at it. Things a bit chaotic at the moment as we have a new baby in the house. I am happy to answer any questions - it might just take me a while to reply at the moment! Jayne

Hi Sam,
thank-you for adding me as a friend. I found this link on a IRSF post. I would like to share our story about Rett and would be willing to answer any questions . I am very involved at Victoria's school. She has a great team of para's and special ed teachers. I have logged everything from her pre-diagnosis to present. I have made a infomercial with Victoria's doctor about Rett, it is shown randomly in Colo. Again thank-you I look forward to hearing from you. Vickie

Thanks... and thanks! This is a great medium for connecting with people and the natural progression, I think, from list-servs etc. It's great to have feedback about our website. We worked hard trying to make the website accessible, plain English and user-friendly. We still need to work on the accessibility of our pdf documents though...
