Autism

Which app's has anyone found most useful for non verbal adolescents with autism that have never been given a shot at any formal reading program in school.  I have a child that had his FIRST reading assessment at 18!  They tested him orally and naturally he failed.  Is there any visual reading app anyone could recommend.  His parents just bought him the iPad.Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.  Marie DugganSee More

Marie, the visual scene display stuff would be cool to talk about in relation to the stuff being worked on at Children's. I saw that H. Shane is working on using scenes with students with autism. I am going to try to attend the session at ASHA. Anyways, talk to you soon.

Sam, I spoke with H yesterday and asked him if we could have you come in for an hour or so during our Thursday ALP (Autism Language Program) lunch mtgs, I thought the clinicians would love to see some of the work you are doing and your enthusiasm for it! The visual scene stuff H is working on takes the visual scenes in a whole new direction. It's pretty powerful. I will be attending ASHA too as I will be presenting with Richard Lytton and Dave Hersberger. Are you presenting?

let's stay in touch. This type of list is new for me. I guess I should stop being afraid of some of the technology and start posting some pix and video of my son even!

Have a good one.

Hi!! Marie

WOW, you presented at ASHA. What was the presentation and how did it go? Thank you for your positive feedback. QIAT has been my outlet for being work-a-holic and since I have been mostly in bed for 9 months it is a huge outlet for me. Are you going to ATIA? I am hoping that I make it there.

Have a wonderful holiday with your family. Hope you have a chance to unwind.

Hi Jeannette,

I presented with Richard Lytton from Alfred I duPont Children's and Dave Hershberger (he was representing ATIA not Saltillo. The presentation was titled "AAC Users, Families Clinicians, & Vendors: Where are our boundaries?
I will say, it was a lot different from my previous presentations typically on the use of visual supports in the home, school & community from low tech to high tech, but I personally got alot of positive feedback. The purpose was to define each person on the teams role and level of comittment etc. Pat Ourand from USSAAC recommended me for this as I have been using, advocating, programming, creating all types of visual media to get my autistic son to communicate. He uses schedules on his iPod and video Ipod and his device, as well as numerous mobile visual displays that I have created for just about everything I could think of!! It was really a super experience for me.

I am sorry to hear you have been tied up so long....I had a tough start to the year with an emergency hysterectome and then knee surgery from tripping over my computer and now after spending the whole summer thru the present going to PT I am scheduled for more surgery Dec 7th on the same knee....sigh... It's difficult for me to be slowed down with 6 kids and Mike....I have become an expert hopper!

Michael had emerging speech at the age of 12, so I am very grateful for all of you out there on the list servs that offer so much wonderful insight and advice. I feel like I have a whole different family.....a techno family that continues to teach me to make my son a more functional communicator everyday.

Thanks for inviting me to be a friend on this list!
Looking forward to some great discussions.

Marie, What's up at Children's? How are you?
At 4:37am on April 28, 2008, Marie Duggan said…
Hi Sam,
Things are great at Children's! We are very busy in the process of developing a really exciting software application now which we hope will be out very shortly, like within the next month or two.
Just completed my fundraising efforts on behalf of autism through the Boston Marathon and am planning a big event on Nantucket to raise money for the autism language program so we may continue to advance and accelerate our treatment with kiddos with ASD's.
I have been trying to figure out a couple things with iMovie and not sure if you utilize this app in your work. If so I would like to speak with you about what I am trying to accomplish. I am also still very interested in our discussion at ASHA regarding the iPhone. I really see potential with that with my son.
Thanks for checking in!
Marie
PS you continue to amaze me on the QUIAT List serv.....you are so knowledgeable.....I wish we lived closer. I would love a one day training with you!
