Great news! The NWRSFoundation has asked me back this summer to speak again on literacy learning. :0) If anyone will be in the Salem, OR, area the first weekend of August, please come join us!
This summer we'll move beyond the importance of providing opportunities for literacy instruction for our girls to paractical ways to build foundational literacy skills. Again, the hard part is scaling down the information to an hour and a half. That's going to be tough, because the access piece is a full day in itself!
I'd really appreciate any feedback on what you folks think would be most helpful as I prioritize my limited time. I plan to include the Penn State work by Light and McNaughton as well as Erickson and Koppenhaver's 4-Blocks and Bear et al's Words Their Way materials (whew!). Our target audience is largely parents, so they are very much helped by seeing model activities. Since many older girls have never had exposure to basic literacy learning, we also need to address ways to make simple skills appropriate for mature interests. The time constraints are always a frustration...
It would be wonderful to see some Ningmates at the conference! It's always a wonderful time. If folks are interested, I'll post the handouts here when they are done.
